Not Living Our Core Values

Our values matter because they determine who we are and what we do. They are the DNA of our actions. We call them our core values for a reason. They are the core of who we are on the inside and the way we act on the outside. If I say love is one of mine and I neglect my family and treat my employees badly, I have to assume that is not true. You may have heard the phrase, actions speak louder than words. They do. I can say anything, but it’s how I act in the end that matters. Knowing and living our values can be a game changer.

Your core values act like your internal compass, which navigates the course of your life. If you compromise your core values, you go nowhere.

Roy T Bennett

If Mr Bennett is right, we need to know our values if we want to go anywhere.

The problem is, we have all seen people who say they have a set of core values. We’ve watched these same people steal money, have extramarital affairs, lie publicly, and do many other things we haven’t seen. I think this all goes back to the fact that they thought they knew. They thought they were living their core values. But in the end, they knew nothing, they just thought they did. It’s hard to live something that you just think you know. It’s much easier to live a life by a set of values that you’ve done the work to figure out what they are.

Here’s a case in point. Elvis Presley talked about God and church in a lot of his interviews. He released albums of nothing but gospel songs, and he couldn’t live his values. He even said, “Values are like fingerprints. Nobody’s are the same, but you leave them all over everything you do.” Elvis had to deal with other demons, which in the end is why he couldn’t live the way he wanted. But Elvis is just one example. I’m sure you can come up with a dozen more off the top of your head. Most of us have met or known people like this. They can talk about what they believe all day, they just can’t live it because they haven’t done the inside work.
